Manik Saha to seek Centre’s intervention over flooding risks

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha assured the state assembly on Wednesday that he would raise concerns with the Centre regarding the construction of a massive embankment by the Bangladesh government near the Kailashahar subdivision in Unakoti district. The issue was highlighted by Congress legislator Birajit Sinha, who warned of potential flooding risks if Tripura’s existing 40-year-old embankment at Rangaoti is not urgently strengthened. “If our embankment is not fortified, the people of Kailashahar will face severe hardships during floods,” Sinha said.

Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das, representing Unakoti district, emphasized the need for action, citing gaps in fencing along the India-Bangladesh border that have also led to cattle smuggling. Unakoti District Magistrate D K Chakma expressed concerns that the embankment on the Bangladesh side could obstruct the natural flow of floodwaters during the monsoon, exacerbating the risk of flooding in Tripura.

Chief Minister Saha confirmed that reports had already been sent to Delhi and reiterated his commitment to bringing the matter to the Centre’s attention. “This is an international issue that requires immediate intervention,” he said.
