Tripura Police, in collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF) and Tripura State Rifles (TSR), executed a significant anti-drug operation in Sepahijala district, constituting the largest single-day effort against illegal cannabis cultivation in the state. The operation, held on Saturday, resulted in the destruction of approximately 19 lakh premature ganja plants valued at nearly Rs 100 crore across 650 acres in North Kalamchoura, South Kalamchoura, Anandapur, and Ghatigarh. A joint team of about 600 personnel was mobilized following specific intelligence, utilizing drones to locate plantations in remote forested areas. Additional Superintendent of Police Rajib Sutradhar indicated that such coordinated efforts would continue in vulnerable regions as part of the state’s ongoing initiative against drugs and trafficking. While police suggest local residents are implicated in cultivating ganja on encroached lands, no arrests have been made thus far. It is noted that processed ganja from these plantations is often smuggled to states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh for higher prices.
