Around 500 workers at the Gaglachera tea estate in Assam’s Hailakandi district have launched an agitation after the authorities reportedly “suddenly” suspended operations.
The workers have been protesting against the decision of the Bagan authorities since Thursday after the lockdown was announced the previous day.
Kurmi alleged that workers were paid daily wages that were lower than the official rate and that women workers were forced to pick more tea leaves than daily.
“Now we have no one to address our grievances,” he claimed.
Additionally, official bodies of tea associations said they are aware of the issue and will sort it out soon.
