Khandu Says Centre’s Hydro Scheme to Benefit Northeast

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu praised the Union Cabinet’s approval of the Small Hydro Power Development Scheme for 2026-31, emphasizing its ability to promote clean energy and enhance rural economies in the Northeast. He noted that the scheme will provide financial support for hilly and border areas, unlocking the potential of local rivers for decentralized energy generation. Khandu highlighted the multifaceted benefits of small hydro projects, including job creation, sustainable development, and infrastructure enhancement without large-scale displacement. The scheme offers central financial assistance of Rs.3.6 crore per MW or 30% of project costs, capped at Rs 30 crore per project, specifically targeting small hydro projects of 1-25 MW in Northeastern States and border districts.
