Justice UU Lalit today took oath as the 49th CJI, a day after Justice NV Ramana retired from the top judicial post. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office of Chief Justice of India to Justice Lalit at Rashtrapati Bhavan this morning.
Justice Ramana followed the conventions and rules of seniority and encouraged Justice Lalit as his successor. Due to this fact, the President confirmed the appointment of Justice Lalit as the new Chief Justice of India.
Justice Lalit will serve an accelerated tenure of 74 days as the Chief Justice of India and will retire on November 8.
At Justice Raman’s farewell function yesterday, Justice Lalit said that during his tenure of about 3 months, his focus will be on three key areas and one of his top priorities will be to make the case checklist simple, clear and accurate. Be as clear as possible.
