Resident doctors at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Manipur, have suspended their week-long strike following an assurance from the state government to consider rolling back the increased postgraduate course fees for the October 2022 batch.
The Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) announced the decision after holding talks with the Secretary to the Governor. The government assured that the proposal to revert to the previous fee structure of ₹1 lakh per annum from the revised ₹3 lakh is under active consideration. A final decision, along with details regarding fee payment deadlines, is expected soon.
The strike, which began on May 21, disrupted medical services as resident doctors account for nearly 70% of JNIMS’s workforce. On May 26, the protest escalated with a complete boycott of emergency services, drawing attention to the steep fee hike and the doctors’ long-standing demands for fair education costs. While services have resumed, the RDA warned that the suspension is temporary. If demands are not met within four weeks, further action may follow.
