Tripura Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury announced plans to file privilege motions in the Tripura Legislative Assembly against Director General of Police (DGP) Amitabh Ranjan and other officials for allegedly restricting their visit to Gandatwisa in Dhalai District. Addressing a press conference, Chaudhury, who is also a CPIM MLA, criticized the state government for its handling of the situation in Gandatwisa following the death of a young boy on July 12, which sparked significant protests. “Since the 12th of this month, misrule has prevailed in Gandatwisa, leading to loss of livelihoods, homes, and businesses,” he stated.
Chaudhury recounted his attempts to coordinate with authorities to address the unrest. “I spoke with the Dhalai DM on July 12, urging action. Later, I contacted the Chief Minister and the DGP, offering our support to restore order,” he said. However, his request to visit the affected area on July 20 was initially postponed by the DM. On July 22, Chaudhury and four other CPIM leaders decided to visit Gandatwisa. Despite receiving clearance from the DM, their police escorts were ordered to stand down by SP Security. “We continued without the escort but were stopped by a heavy police presence before entering Gandacherra,” Chaudhury reported. He accused the DGP of using police forces to unlawfully block assembly members.
Chaudhury emphasized that the privilege motions aim to hold the DGP accountable for failing to maintain law and order and for infringing on the rights of elected officials. “If the situation is truly under control, why is the administration so fearful of our visit?” he questioned.
