Skyroot Aerospace on Friday created history by sending India’s first privately built rocket Vikram-S into space. The successful launch marks the entry of the private sector into the Indian space program, which has so far been government-controlled and funded.
The Vikram-S rocket launched from the sounding rocket complex of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh at around 11.30 am. The rocket achieved an altitude of 89.5 km and a range of 121.2 km as the way plan was made.
The Skyroot Aerospace-designed Vikram-S, named in a fitting tribute to Vikram Sarabhai, the father of the country’s space program, has tasted success on its maiden mission. Skyroot Aerospace became the first privately held company in India after the Center opened up the aerospace sector to private players in 2020.
