India’s first of its kind Mega prosthesis Fixation for femur (thigh bone) and Laparoscopic Radical nephrectomy to remove a cancerous kidney as a single stage surgery through a Multimodal approach has been performed on a woman (54) from Assam giving her a new lease of life. Two complex and complicated surgery on the patient has been successfully performed at same time by a team of doctors at Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (the first Proton Therapy Centre in South Asia & the Middle East). The patient had sustained fracture of her left thigh bone and suffered with a trivial injury 2 months ago and was completely bedridden.
At Apollo Proton Cancer Centre a biopsy was done and her report confirmed that she had a fourth stage kidney cancer and cancer cells travelled to the thigh bone. Completed in 6 hours, the knee joint containing the Tumor was removed with wide margins and replaced with mega prosthesis. She also underwent a laparoscopic Kidney removal using Keyhole surgery. After the procedure the patient was mobilized the very next day and made to walk after almost 3 months.
