IMD issues red alert for Mizoram amid heavy rain forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mizoram, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds across the state on Thursday.

In view of the warning, the Mizoram government has ordered the closure of all schools for the day as a precautionary step to ensure the safety of students and staff. The decision was taken by the School Education Department after consultations with the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department.

Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors and follow safety instructions. Emergency helplines — 1077, 1070, 0389-2342520, and 112 — have been activated, and the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) along with district-level centres are on high alert.

The state’s Disaster Management Department has urged the public to remain cautious and report any emergency immediately.
