“Knee replacement” is the process of making a damaged knee functional again by removing the damaged part of knee joint and replacing it by an artificial implant through Orthopedic surgery. This surgery is done to relieve the knee pain in osteoarthritis patients and to make the knee functional again. Moreover this surgery also improves the functionality of knee in cases of Rheumatoid arthritis and knee injury, as stated by Dr. Santanu Sarma in a press release on 9th April in Health City Hospital on the occasion of a CME titled “Recent trend and update in Knee Replacement surgery” being organised in Health City Hospital in association with Guwahati Orthopedic Society. Dr. Sarma, Consultant Orthopedician in Health City Hospital has stated that due to the lack of proper infrastructure and public awareness, this surgery was not popular in the North-East. But now there is no lack of such infrastructure. Also the government has made provisions to give financial assistance to patients through various schemes like “Atal Amrit” “Ayushman Bharat” etc. The use of advanced technology and equipment has brought down both the cost and time of such surgery.
On the other hand commenting on CME (Continued Medical Education), the CMD of Health City Hospital, Dr. Bhabananda Das has stated that medical science is not a static subject. Continued study and research makes medical science dynamic and gives new dimension to it. Such continued study and research results in development of advanced technology and treatment procedures. He also said that earlier patients had to wait for at least 20 days to get the results of knee replacement surgery, but now people gets cured within 1 week itself. To be noted, Dr. Bhusan M Sabnis, famous unicompartmental knee replacement surgeon from Mumbai with international reputation, and Dr.Pankaj Rai, Orthopedic surgeon of Indian Airforce has participated in this CME cum workshop as invited guests. Dr. Bhusan has discussed about knee replacement in young patients and sports persons, and Dr. Pankaj Rai talked about the latest updates in complex knee replacement surgery. Facility director of Health City Hospital, Paragjyoti Dutta, has stated that more than hundred Graduate students of Orthopedic surgery and teachers from Assam and entire North-East has participated in this CME and presented research papers.
