Guwahati HC asks Tamil Nadu to allow Assam for inspection

In 2008, Assam gave an elephant, Joymola to the Tamil Nadu temple.

Recently a video was noticed by the animal activists of Assam of an elephant being tortured by a mahout, beaten badly, and screaming in pain. Following, one Assam team was sent to Tamil Nadu for bringing Joymala and the other eight elephants back.

But their Government did not permit the request. Soon the Assam government filed a petition in Gauhati High Court for the custody of Joymala from the Tamil Nadu government last week.

Sources said the Gauhati High Court on Friday directed the Tamil Nadu government to allow the Assam team to visit the elephant Jayamala at Sriviliputhur temple.

Assam Advocate General Devjit Lone Saikia said, “The court has issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government to make arrangements for the Assam team which is staying in Chennai to inspect the health condition of Jayamala and eight other elephants.”
