GST awareness drive held in Bomdila to empower local taxpayers

In a focused effort to boost tax literacy and ensure better compliance, a one-day GST Outreach cum Training Programme was conducted at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall in Bomdila, West Kameng district. The initiative aimed to educate local taxpayers, business owners, and administrative personnel on the key aspects of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. The programme was jointly organized by the Office of the Superintendent, Central GST & Central Excise (CGST & CX), Bhalukpong Range, in collaboration with State GST Bomdila and the CGST & CX Itanagar Commissionerate. This collaborative approach highlights the Centre-State synergy in driving awareness about one of India’s most significant tax reforms.

Participants were taken through an in-depth session covering a wide range of GST-related subjects. These included GST registration, return filing processes, the importance of proper record maintenance, and compliance issues specific to sectors such as works contracts and the tourism and hospitality industry. Special attention was given to explaining GST exemptions and addressing common misunderstandings that often lead to unintentional non-compliance. The highlight of the session was a detailed PowerPoint presentation delivered by officials, which laid out the step-by-step procedures for compliance and identified frequent errors made by small businesses and individual taxpayers. The presentation was followed by an interactive Q&A segment, allowing attendees to raise doubts and receive practical clarifications directly from GST officers.

According to officials, the session saw enthusiastic participation from a cross-section of the local population — from small-scale entrepreneurs and contractors to hotel owners and transporters. Local government officials were also present to support the awareness initiative and strengthen coordination between the administration and tax authorities. “Improving GST literacy is essential, especially in remote districts like West Kameng, where access to real-time tax guidance is limited. Through such programmes, we aim to build a bridge between policy and practice,” said an official from the Bhalukpong Range.
