Govt Directs IndiGo to Sack Senior VP Over Flight Cancellation Chaos

The Centre on Thursday told the Delhi High Court that IndiGo has been instructed to dismiss its senior Vice President following last month’s massive flight cancellation disruption. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) informed the court that an inquiry by its four-member committee found the crisis was triggered by “over-optimisation of operations,” weak regulatory preparedness, gaps in system software support, and shortcomings in the airline’s management structure.
Based on the findings, the regulator imposed a penalty of ₹22.2 crore on IndiGo. The government’s law officer also said warnings were issued to six senior executives, including Chief Operating Officer (COO) Isidre Porqueras Orea, along with the deputy head of flight operations and a resource analyst.
In addition, the DGCA directed the airline to submit ₹50 crore in bank guarantees. The amount will be refunded once IndiGo completes required operational corrections and compliance measures, the regulator told the court.
