Govt cracks down on ads promoting betting with cricket matches on radar

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued an advisory stating that all the stakeholders, including media entities, online advertisement intermediaries and social media platforms must immediately stop displaying ads on betting/gambling as this activity is illegal and one may face a legal action against it.

“Failure to adhere to this advisory may invite appropriate action from the Government under various statutes,” the advisory states.

The I&B Ministry has observed in its advisory that “there is a tendency to step up advertisements and promotion of such betting and gambling platforms during a major sporting event, especially cricket, and one such important international event is beginning in a few days from now.”

It seems like the notice is pointing to the India vs Pakistan ODI match which will held on 2nd of September as a part of Asia Cup Series.

As per the department these activities will have a severe effect on the financial stability of youths, it can be also an attempt of the individual to turn his black money into white by investing the black money in gambling. The activities will hamper the economy of a country at a great extent.
