Gauhati High Court voices for evictees, Assam

Gauhati High Court has slammed Assam Govt Himanta Biswa Sarma for not making adequate arrangements for evictees in Assam by calling it “inhumanity of the highest order”.

Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta told the Assam government advocate D. Nath on April 21, “How long can you keep people like cattle in temporary shelters built of tarpaulin?”

According to the sources, on April 20 senior advocate Bhaskar Dev Konwar visited the rehabilitation camp on high court’s instruction.

Earlier, the eviction drive was carried out by the forest department as per an order of the high court based on a public interest litigation filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Hojai, Shiladitya Dev.
