From Bharat Mandapam to the World: India Leads the First Global South AI Summit

The India AI Impact Summit 2026 opened today at New Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam, positioning the nation as a pivotal leader in the global artificial intelligence landscape. Inaugurating the five-day landmark event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that India’s 1.4 billion people are not merely users of technology but the driving force behind a “responsible and inclusive” AI transformation. He emphasized that the summit, the first of its kind hosted in the Global South, reflects the immense capability of India’s youth and the country’s rapid strides in science and technology. The Prime Minister highlighted that India’s approach to AI is rooted in the philosophy of “Sarvajana Hitaya, Sarvajana Sukhaya” (Welfare for All, Happiness for All), aiming to leverage the technology to bridge developmental gaps in healthcare, agriculture, and education.

A central highlight of the summit’s opening was the unveiling of 12 indigenous foundation AI models, developed under the India AI Mission to support the nation’s 22 official languages and reduce dependence on foreign tech stacks. With global leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian President Lula da Silva in attendance, alongside tech titans such as Sundar Pichai and Sam Altman, the event has drawn representatives from over 100 countries. PM Modi noted that India’s robust digital public infrastructure and vibrant startup ecosystem provide a unique global model for “frugal innovation.” As the summit unfolds across 70,000 square meters of exhibition space, featuring three thematic “chakras”—People, Planet, and Progress—it serves as a bold declaration of India’s intent to lead the world toward an AI future that is ethical, transparent, and human-centric.
