In a press conference held on March 10 in Guwahati, the Guwahati-based Dr. Bhaba Das Foundation announced the commencement of a free heart surgery programme for children under the age of 14 from low-income households. The news conference was attended by Medical Director Dr. B.P. Chakrabarty, Dr. Atanu Barthakur, Dr. Hemjit Talukdar, Dr. Biju Choudhury, Dr. Supriya Choudhury, and Dr. Yasin Ali. Apart from free heart procedures, the organisation prioritises cancer treatments, medical education, nursing education, and scientific research, among other things. The foundation also helps orphans financially and improves the infrastructure of various medical organisations.
Dr. Bhaba Das Foundation was established in 2017 to provide various health-related programmes and orientation to the people of North-East India, as well as to distribute various foods, medicines, and clothing to flood-affected areas, as well as sanitizers, masks, and other items. In addition, in collaboration with the Assam government, free Covid vaccinations are available. The foundation has already provided financial help for free heart surgery for children from low-income families. Dr. J.P. Kalita, a cardiac surgeon, stated that 2 lakh children in India suffer from congenital heart disease each year. The recovery rate after surgery is 90%.
