Former Army Chief General Vijay Kumar Singh to take charge as Mizoram Governor

Former Army Chief General Vijay Kumar Singh is set to be sworn in as the new governor of Mizoram on January 9, an official confirmed on Monday. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Raj Bhavan, where the oath of office and secrecy will be administered by the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. The event will witness the presence of Chief Minister Lalduhoma, cabinet members, Assembly Speaker Lalbiakzama, Deputy Speaker Lalfamkima, Members of Parliament, senior officials, and distinguished guests.

General Singh, who was appointed by President Droupadi Murmu last Tuesday, will succeed Hari Babu Kambhampati. Kambhampati has been designated as the governor of Odisha following the resignation of Raghubar Das. Born in 1951, Singh had a distinguished career in the Indian Army, serving as the 24th Chief of Army Staff from 2010 to 2012. After his retirement, he ventured into politics, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2014. Singh was subsequently elected to the Lok Sabha from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, and secured re-election in 2019.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure, Singh held several key ministerial portfolios, including minister of state for external affairs, minister of state for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), and minister of state for road transport and highways.
