FIR lodged against Assam CM for promoting religious tensions

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, supported by a coalition of opposition parties, has lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The complaint, filed at Dispur Police Station on Wednesday, accuses Sarma of fostering communal discord and promoting enmity between different religious and racial communities. The opposition alliance includes the Assam Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI(M), Raijor Dal, CPI, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Janata Dal (United), Trinamool Congress, and CPI(ML). The coalition alleges that Sarma’s recent statements and actions have exacerbated communal tensions in the state.

According to the FIR, Sarma has made provocative remarks, particularly targeting the Muslim community. A notable incident cited occurred on August 23, 2024, during a press conference where Sarma reportedly accused a specific community of engaging in behavior aimed at displacing others from certain areas. The opposition parties argue that these statements have fueled violent incidents, including attacks on religious minorities in Sivasagar by BJP workers. The FIR further accuses Sarma of conspiring with other BJP leaders to incite riot-like conditions in Assam for political gain.

Congress leaders, including President Bhupen Kumar Borah and General Secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi, have called for the police to file charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and to take swift action against Sarma and his associates to prevent further unrest.
