Bombay High Court judge Gautam Patel opined that blockbuster movies like ‘Singham’ set a wrong precedent and send a dangerous message.
Justice Patel pointed out that the cinematic depiction of “instant dispensation of justice” by a hero policeman not only gave a wrong message but encouraged “impatience” with due process of law.
Speaking at a function organized on the occasion of the Indian Police Foundation’s Annual Day and Police Reforms Day, Justice Gautam Patel said, “In films, the police are against judges who are shown as polite, timid, bespectacled and often poorly dressed. They complain. They accuse the courts of letting the guilty go. The hero cop delivers justice single-handedly.”
“The movie Singham is especially shown in its climax scene where the entire police force descends on a politician played by Prakash Raj… and shows that justice has now been served. But I ask, is it,” Justice Patel said, adding we One should think “How dangerous is this message.”
If this process is abandoned in favor of “shortcuts”, then “we undermine the rule of law,” Justice Patel underlined.
Singham hit the theatre in July 2011, and is an action film directed by Rohit Shetty. It is a remake of the 2010 Tamil film of the same title and stars Ajay Devgan as a police officer. It is the first installment of Shetty’s cop universe.
