The Election Commission is set to announce its decision on Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma’s alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) on February 10, ahead of the February 12 village council elections. The State Election Commission (SEC) had issued a show-cause notice to the chief minister following a complaint by the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF). State election commissioner H Lalthlangliana confirmed that Lalduhoma submitted his explanation on February 9, while the Kolasib district election officer provided a report on the alleged violation.
MNF general secretary J Rosangpuia accused the CM of announcing new government policies during a meeting with Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) leaders from Tuirial West Block, Kolasib. The complaint also cited a photograph circulated from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), which allegedly violated the MCC. This incident follows a similar case where PWD Minister Vanlalhlana was pardoned by the SEC after issuing an apology for a separate violation.
The upcoming elections will cover 544 village councils across nine districts (excluding three autonomous district councils) and 111 local councils under Aizawl Municipal Corporation and Lunglei Municipal Council. A total of 6,829 candidates are contesting for village councils, while 2,076 are in the fray for local council seats. Counting will begin at 7 PM on February 12 or immediately after polling concludes.
