Drug trafficker Lalchhanmawii recaptured in Champhai”

A Myanmar national, notorious for her involvement in drug trafficking, has been recaptured after escaping from Mizoram’s Central Jail Aizawl and Champhai District Jail on two separate occasions. Lalchhanmawii, alias C. Mawii (44), a resident of Khawmawi, Myanmar, was apprehended by local volunteers and handed over to Champhai Police on January 29, 2025.

Lalchhanmawii first escaped on November 30, 2023, from the Central Jail in Aizawl, along with two other female inmates. She had been convicted under Sairang Police Station Case No. 5/21, dated March 15, 2021, for possessing 59.54 grams of heroin. A case (No. 341/23) was registered at Vaivakawn Police Station for the jailbreak under Sections 224/34 of the IPC. After her initial recapture, Lalchhanmawii and another escapee, Lalruatsangi, were sent to Champhai District Jail on May 12, 2024, following a conviction under Champhai Police Station Case No. 95/2024 for possessing 250 grams of heroin. However, on December 18, 2024, Lalchhanmawii escaped once more from Champhai District Jail, along with another inmate, Vansuiemi alias Suinunfeli (36), also from Myanmar. A new case (Champhai PS Case No. 254/2024) was registered for the second jailbreak.

Lalchhanmawii is a high-profile under-trial prisoner with several drug-related cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Her recapture was made possible through the joint efforts of various agencies, including Mizoram Police, the Excise & Narcotics Department, Sub-Headquarters YMA Champhai, and organizations from Myanmar.
