In a move hailed as transformative, Bangladesh has inaugurated two new lines of the Dhaka Metro Rail, connecting critical business and residential districts. This expansion, backed by Japan’s JICA, is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and pollution.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina attended the flag-off ceremony and said, “This is a leap towards a more connected and sustainable Dhaka.” The metro is now capable of handling over 500,000 daily commuters.
Urban planners in Kolkata and Guwahati are observing Dhaka’s model as they draft blueprints for mass transit improvements in India’s northeastern cities, where traffic and urban sprawl mirror similar challenges.
