Cyrus Mistry, who succeeded Ratan Tata as chairman of Tata Sons but was later ousted in one of India’s most high-profile boardroom coups, died in a car accident in Palghar, Maharashtra, on Sunday, police said. He was 54.
Mr. Mistry was traveling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in a Mercedes car, it added.
Photos from the crash site show the mangled remains of a silver Mercedes. The accident took place when the automobile hit an avenue divider in Charoti area of Palghar, 135 km from Mumbai.
Two other humans traveling with him, along with the automobile driver, had been injured. All the injured have been shifted to a sanatorium in Gujarat.
PM Modi led the nation in mourning the loss of the business tycoon, calling it a “huge loss” to the world of commerce and industry.
“The untimely demise of Shri Cyrus Mistry is shocking. He was once a promising enterprise leader who believed in India’s financial prowess. His passing away is a large loss to the world of commerce and industry. Condolences to his household and friends. May his soul rest in peace,” PM Modi tweeted.
