Congress set for comeback in Mizoram, says Alka Lamba

All India Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba has launched a sharp attack on Mizoram’s Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) government, accusing it of failing to deliver essential welfare schemes to the people. She expressed confidence that the Congress would reclaim power in the state. Addressing a press conference in Aizawl on Tuesday, Lamba discussed the party’s revival plans with senior leaders, including former Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla and Mizoram Congress president Lal Thanzara. She asserted that Congress is poised for a comeback both at the Centre and in Mizoram.

“The ZPM government has neglected the welfare of women and the marginalized. If Congress returns to power, we will ensure better schemes for the people,” Lamba stated. She pointed out that Congress-led states such as Telangana and Karnataka have introduced women-friendly initiatives, like subsidized LPG cylinders and free public bus transport, while Mizoram under ZPM has lagged in implementing similar welfare measures. Lamba also took aim at the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, criticizing its handling of the ongoing crisis in Manipur. She accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of ignoring the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023, which has claimed over 250 lives and displaced thousands.

Furthermore, she alleged that the central government has failed to secure India’s borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, leading to increased drug trafficking into Mizoram. With Mizoram sharing a 510-km border with Myanmar and a 318-km border with Bangladesh, she warned that unchecked cross-border activities are worsening security concerns in the region.
