Former Assam MP Sushmita Dev has quit as the president of the All India Mahila Congress as well as the primary membership of the party.
In a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi late on Sunday evening, she said she wished to “begin a new chapter in my life of public service” and would always cherish “my three decades-long association with the Indian National Congress”.
In a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, dated August 15, Dev did not mention any reason for her decision.
Dev, however, said that she was going to begin “a new chapter in my life of public services”. She also updated her Twitter bio which now describes her as a former member of the Congress.
Meanwhile, she is likely to meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee later in the day amid speculations that she might join the Trinamool Congress, reported media.
“Please treat this letter as my resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress. I cherish my three-decade-long association with the Indian National Congress. May I take this opportunity to thank the party, all its leaders, members and workers who have been a part of my memorable experience,” she said in her resignation letter addressed to Sonia Gandhi.
“Madam, I thank you, personally, for your guidance and the opportunities you gave me. I value the enriching experience. I hope I have your good wishes as I begin a new chapter in my life of public service,” Dev added.
Dev headed the Congress’s women’s wing, the All India Mahila Congress. She is the daughter of the veteran Bengali Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev and was a member of the 16th Lok Sabha from the constituency of Silchar in Assam.
Notably, Dev was among Congress leaders whose Twitter handle was blocked over a post showing images of the family members of a minor girl who was allegedly raped and killed in Delhi. The images were originally posted by former Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
