In a call for justice for the late Olip Mukherjee, who was allegedly beaten to death by inmates and management of the Serene Life Foundation Drug Rehab Centre, a peaceful candlelight procession was held in Pasighat on Sunday evening. The procession, which started from D. Ering Govt. Hr. Secondary School ground and ended at Gandhi Chowk, was organized by Mukherjee’s family, friends, and well-wishers.
The procession participants demanded thorough police investigations and the arrest of all those involved, including members of the Women Against Social Evils (WASE). The protesters alleged that WASE members acted unlawfully by handing Mukherjee over to the rehab centre without verifying his drug addiction status. They accused WASE President Yamik Dulom Darang of colluding with the rehab centre and manipulating the situation to their advantage.
Mukherjee’s mother, Smty Mohimang Litin, along with other family members, contested the claims that Mukherjee was a drug user. They argued that WASE’s actions were based on unfounded allegations and that the organization did not have the authority to act as they did. Litin also challenged the validity of her supposed consent for Mukherjee’s admission to the rehab centre, stating that her signature was forged.
There were further allegations against WASE members, including claims that they extorted money from local traders and manipulated the situation for financial gain. Participants in the procession called for the WASE president and involved members to be booked for their alleged roles in Mukherjee’s death and demanded a transparent and thorough investigation.
The community has urged continuous public pressure to ensure justice for Mukherjee and to prevent the influence of power and money from obstructing the investigation. They emphasized the need for justice without discrimination based on tribal affiliations, highlighting the equal value of all lives in the eyes of a mother.
