In a significant move to enhance aviation security in the Northeast, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will assume charge of security at Mizoram’s lone airport in Lengpui from April 24. The Ministry of Home Affairs sanctioned the deployment of over 120 CISF personnel following a threat assessment by central intelligence agencies.
This marks the CISF’s first deployment in Mizoram and makes Lengpui the 69th airport in India to be guarded by the paramilitary force, which functions as the national civil aviation security agency. A formal induction ceremony will be held on April 24. Located 35 km from Aizawl in Mamit district, Lengpui Airport has strategic importance due to its proximity to the India-Myanmar border, approximately 200 km away. Built in 1998 by the Mizoram government, the airport is connected to Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Silchar, and Imphal.
The CISF will replace the current joint team of state police and CRPF, which has secured the airport since 1999. Officials confirmed that the CISF will handle passenger checks, baggage screening, and deploy Quick Reaction Teams with armed commandos.
