Chief Minister Pema Khandu participated in a significant river ranching initiative

At Choskhorong-Kho, Shergaon, Chief Minister Pema Khandu took part in a major river ranching project with Home Minister Mama Natung, State BJP President Kaling Moyong, and numerous other dignitaries. In order to support sustainability and biodiversity conservation, 7,000 specimens of the native Schizothorax species were released into the river as part of the program. The National Fisheries Development Board in Hyderabad supported the event, which was organized by the Department of Fisheries in the West Kameng district of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh.

In order to promote in-situ conservation efforts and deter unethical fishing methods, river ranching—a crucial stock improvement strategy—involves introducing fish species into natural water bodies. Shri Hage Tari, IFS, Secretary (Fisheries), emphasized the significance of the project and declared that 11 districts in Arunachal Pradesh would see the implementation of comparable initiatives. The program’s goals were explained by M.C. Adak, DFDO West Kameng, who also went into detail about other government initiatives that assist the development of fisheries.

The honoring of the Garung Thuk NGO, which has been instrumental in the river’s conservation and protection since 2014, was a significant component of the occasion. At the 2024 International Water Conclave in Meghalaya, when the river was recognized as the Best Water-Conserved Area, their achievements were recognized. Prominent dignitaries, such as Garung Thuk Chairman Ledo Thungon, P.N. Thungon, DC Siang, and Akriti Sagar, DC West Kameng, attended the occasion and praised the effort as a step toward ecological balance and sustainable fisheries management.
