CADC seeks urgent Central aid for stalled projects

The Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) has made a fervent appeal to the Central government for urgent financial and infrastructural intervention to address long-pending developmental issues in south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district.

During Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai’s visit to the region on Wednesday, CADC leaders submitted a detailed memorandum outlining critical demands. The council sought expedited approval and funding for 47 stalled development projects spanning road infrastructure, education, skill development, governance, and cultural preservation.

The CADC flagged significant delays in fund disbursal, citing the impact on project execution. Leaders also raised the issue of rehabilitation for families displaced by the Indo-Bangladesh border fencing. A ₹118.75 crore proposal submitted via the Mizoram government is still awaiting MHA clearance.

Faced with a projected fiscal deficit of ₹54.70 crore for FY 2024–25, CADC requested a ₹70 crore one-time special financial package to address salary shortfalls and stabilize administration. The council also highlighted alarming development gaps, including poor road connectivity, a 46.4% literacy rate, and the absence of higher education and adequate healthcare facilities.
