The Border Security Force (BSF) intercepted an illicit consignment of used mobile phones worth over ₹42 lakh along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Sepahijala district. The seizure took place on Sunday as part of an ongoing anti-smuggling operation.
According to officials, a BSF ambush team detected suspicious movements of five to six individuals near the Matinagar area in Sonamura. When challenged, the suspects abandoned their consignment and fled. A subsequent search led to the recovery of 187 secondhand mobile phones from various leading brands.
A BSF spokesperson confirmed that the seized mobile phones have been handed over to the Customs department for further investigation. Authorities suspect that the consignment was being smuggled into Bangladesh as part of an organized racket.
