It was formally announced by Himankhu Sekhar Das, Chairman, BVB, Guwahati Kendra in the presence of Dr. B.P. Todi, Vice Chairman, Ramen Chakraborty, Secretery and Ramen Das, Member, BVB, Guwahati Kendra. Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, a public trust, was founded by Kulapati Dr. K.M. Munshi with the blessings of Mahatma Gandhi in 1938 with the objective of preservation and promotion of Indian Culture and Heritage.

It is one of the most legendary non government institutions in the world adored by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Sardar Ballav Bhai Patel, Jagat Guru Chandrasekharendra Saraswati, Mother Teresa, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Dr. Zakir Hussain, Former Prime Minister of UK Harold Macmillan, Noble Laureate Dr. C. V. Raman and many other luminaries. The organization started its journey with the project of Book University, an initiative to make available all ancient and modern Indian scriptural, spiritual, cultural, Philosophical and intellectual texts at a very negligible price so that every Indian, rich or poor, can procure them and study to become aware of ancient Indian cultural heritage. Since then Bhavan has relentlessly and tirelessly expanded its activities with an eye on the holistic rejuvenation of Bharat. Today, the Bhavan is implementing several multi-dimensional programs through 367 constituent institutions, 119 Kendras (branch centers) in India and 5 centers abroad. Bhavan runs hundreds of Higher Secondary schools, Colleges in Management, Engineering and Technology, Teachers Training, Music & Performing Arts besides Sanskrit Education Program and Skill Development courses. Many other formal and informal educational projects are also implemented by Bhavan from time to time.

In 2000, Dr. Manmohan Singh, then a Member of Parliament and Bhubaneswar Kalita, MP initiated the effort of starting some activities of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Guwahati. This resulted in establishment of Gandhi institute of computer education & information technology, a computer education wing of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in 2001 to impart Basic Computer education free of cost to the economically backward youths of Assam. In course of time Guwahati Bhavan started a Management Institute offering only one stream of Public Relations Management Course and thereafter started Music and Dance training classes, Spoken English classes and one Skill Development Course under Assam Skill Development Mission. However due to space constraint, resource crunch and upheaval caused by Covid pandemic, the activities at Guwahati Kendra declined to a considerable extent. To revive the activities in a big way, the Guwahati Kendra of Bharatiya Bhavan completed the reconstruction work of its old building at an approximate cost of Rs.70 Lakhs. The building complex is now fully ready to restart its earlier and new activities to achieve the objectives. All the activities of the Guwahati Kendra after inauguration of the Building shall regularly be held at its building located at 5, Kanchan Road, Near Apollo Clinic, Ulubari, Guwahati.
