Bangladesh: Death Threats to Buddhist MP Candidates in CHT Raise Concerns Over Free and Fair Elections

The Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG) has urged international election observers to intervene in Bangladesh due to threats against indigenous Buddhist parliamentary candidates during the 13th Parliamentary elections. Two independent candidates, Mr. Pahel Chakma and Mr. Dharma Jyoti Chakma, allegedly received death threats from the armed group Parbatto Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS), led by Santu Larma, chairman of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Regional Council. Despite filing a General Diary entry, authorities have not registered an FIR. RRAG claims PCJSS intimidates voters to favor major national parties and has been operating with support from state actors. The group called for election monitors and protections for vulnerable candidates in Khagrachari and Rangamati districts to facilitate fair elections.
