Bangladesh Approves Offshore Wind Power Pilot Near Cox’s Bazar

In a landmark decision, the Government of Bangladesh has greenlit a 100 MW offshore wind energy pilot project near Cox’s Bazar. This is the first such initiative in the country’s energy landscape, aimed at reducing dependency on fossil fuels.

The project, to be developed in collaboration with European partners, is expected to be operational by 2027. It will harness wind patterns in the Bay of Bengal and feed power into the national grid.

Energy Minister Nasrul Hamid said, “This project signals our commitment to a greener future. We want to be a regional leader in clean energy.”

The development is also being viewed as a model for neighbouring coastal states in India like Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, which are exploring similar offshore options to meet climate goals.
