Authorities on Alert as Himalayan Water Levels Surge

In eastern Nepal, the water level of the Koshi River has risen sharply due to intense pre-monsoon rainfall, prompting flood alerts across Sunsari and Saptari districts.

Nepal’s Department of Hydrology has issued a red warning, urging residents in low-lying areas to prepare for potential evacuation. Temporary embankments have been reinforced near the Indo-Nepal border.

Local disaster response teams have been deployed, while Indian authorities in Bihar’s Supaul and Araria districts are monitoring the situation. The Koshi, often called the “Sorrow of Bihar,” has a long history of causing floods downstream in India.

Experts urge both countries to implement long-pending transboundary flood management systems. A virtual coordination meeting between Nepal and Bihar officials is scheduled for later this week.
