Attack on Northeast Residents in Delhi Raises Safety Concerns

Delhi Police have apprehended four accused in connection with the assault on a woman from Manipur near the Saket Court Complex in the national capital. Police said all four accused involved in the case are juveniles.According to officials, multiple police teams carried out raids at different locations following the incident. During these operations, all four accused were traced and taken into custody.The incident came to light after two persons from the Northeast — including a transgender individual from Assam and another person from Manipur — were allegedly attacked by a group of individuals near the Saket Court area. The episode has again raised concerns about the safety of people from the Northeast living in Delhi.According to the victim’s sister, the incident took place when the Assam-based transgender person had gone for an evening walk in a nearby park along with a friend. At that time, some children were reportedly playing in the park and allegedly made remarks directed at them.

When the victims objected to the comments, the situation reportedly became tense. The victim’s sister alleged that the group reacted aggressively and continued making objectionable remarks.“Yesterday evening, my sister went for a walk in the park with a friend. Some children were playing there and made comments on them. She objected to it. After that they became aggressive and continued making more objectionable remarks,” the sister said.She further claimed that the situation soon turned violent. According to her, one of the attackers allegedly used a knife while another person assaulted the victim with a belt.“During the altercation, one of them attacked her with a knife. After that she was also hit with a belt. Despite the attack, she kept running to save her life,” the sister said.

The victim reportedly tried to escape from the spot by running while several people were present nearby. However, according to the family, no one stepped forward to help during the attack.The victim has demanded strict action against those responsible for the assault. The case has once again drawn attention to the concerns raised by many people from the Northeast region regarding harassment and safety issues in the national capital.
