Assam rifles, DRI seize 70,000 yaba tablets worth ₹7 cr in Tripura

In a major anti-narcotics operation, the Assam Rifles and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 70,000 Yaba tablets worth ₹7 crore in Tripura’s Khowai district on June 1. Two individuals were arrested in the joint operation, which took place in Teliamura town.

Officials intercepted a WagonR vehicle bearing registration number TR 01-BL-0337 and discovered the tablets concealed within the car. The accused have been identified as Shamal Majumdar from West Tripura and Malaya Debnath from North Tripura. Both were taken into custody and handed over to the DRI for further investigation under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

The operation highlights the growing threat of cross-border drug smuggling and the persistent efforts by security agencies to counter the narcotics trade in Northeast India. Yaba tablets—a methamphetamine-based drug—have seen a surge in circulation along routes from Myanmar through India’s northeastern states.
