Assam family forced to bury man who married outside caste

Atul Sarma was forced to live in social isolation for 27 years and the ostracism continued even after his death.

The incident took place in a village in North Assam’s Darang district. Because Sarma married a woman outside of his caste. The family has allegedly been left to live socially isolated in the village for the past 27 years.

After the incident came to light, the police picked up a man for allegedly inciting villagers not to participate in Sarma’s cremation. Darrang Superintendent of Police Raj Mohan Roy told to the newspaper,“We picked one up. There are many stories about his role. We are investigating the matter,”.

“We wanted his body to be cremated as per Hindu rituals. After his death, I called the people of the village. They came but refused to participate in the cremation because I am not from his community. So we are forced to bury the body,” said Pranita Devi, widow of the deceased.
