Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt. General KT Parnaik (Retd.) took an active role in the second edition of ‘Mithun Day’ celebrations on September 1, at the Dorjee Khandu Convention Centre in Itanagar. The event marked a significant step towards enhancing Mithun farming practices in the region. Governor Parnaik inaugurated the National Seminar on ‘Integrated Mithun Farming for Enhancing Farmers’ Income in the North Eastern Region of India,’ where he also launched several key publications, including status papers, informational leaflets, and a commemorative souvenir dedicated to Mithun farming. Additionally, the Governor honored progressive Mithun farmers with awards, acknowledging their vital contributions to the field.
In his address, Governor Parnaik highlighted the critical importance of Mithun in Arunachal Pradesh, noting that the state is home to 89% of the global Mithun population. He underscored the cultural and symbolic value of Mithun in the region and expressed pride in the state’s leadership in nurturing this unique species. However, the Governor also pointed out the challenges facing Mithun conservation, including inadequate policy support, which has led to habitat exploitation and a decline in population. He advocated for a combination of traditional practices and modern conservation techniques to ensure the species’ sustainability.
Drawing from his extensive experience in the Himalayan and Northeastern regions, Governor Parnaik proposed the creation of a special land use policy and the establishment of community-based Mithun conservation areas. He suggested setting up Community Mithun Rearing Centres in key locations and launching a Pilot Project on Mithun Research & Development to enhance farming practices.
