Arecanut Processing Facility Launched in Mizoram

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma inaugurated the Arecanut Processing Unit by SSB Agro in Buhchangphai, with Agriculture Minister P.C. Vanlalruata and other dignitaries present. The Chief Minister noted that Mizoram has approximately 30,000 hectares dedicated to arecanut cultivation, projecting a production of 2 lakh quintals for the 2024–25 period. He recognized arecanut as a profitable livelihood, supported by government schemes like the Handholding Scheme and CM Special Package. Addressing concerns, he pointed out the extensive loss of arecanut trees since 2021 due to water stress and nutrient deficiency, highlighting the necessity for improved plantation management and water conservation. The Chief Minister also announced the government’s actions against illegal arecanut trade, which have improved market conditions for farmers; he stressed the importance of local processing for better pricing. Processing units are being established in Chemphai and Zamuang, set to operate next year. He praised SSB Agro for creating a high-capacity unit processing 3,000 nuts per hour and expressed optimism about the collaboration with MAMCOS benefiting numerous farmers. Minister Vanlalruata reiterated the significance of processing for value addition and market stability, also mentioning future initiatives for other crops such as ginger, turmeric, and chilli. The event included a technical report presentation by Sangbiak Lal Khuptong and concluded with a prayer by Rev. Solomon Lalmuanpuia Khiangte.
