The Treasury Bazar in Aizawl, which was destroyed by fire early Monday morning, will not be rebuilt at its current location, Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Lalrinenga Sailo announced. Despite growing vendor protests, the market will be relocated to the AMC Multicomplex in Tuikual South for public safety reasons.
After visiting the fire site with Deputy Mayor R. Thanglura and Corporator David Zohmangaiha, Sailo stated that the site had a history of disasters, including a bomb blast, wall collapse, and past fire incidents. Given its proximity to the Assembly House, the AMC, after consultations with the State government, Home Minister, and Speaker of the House, decided that the market should be shifted permanently.
“This location was originally a public space before becoming a market over time. For public safety, we have decided not to rebuild it here,” Sailo said, expressing condolences to affected traders and residents. The Treasury Bazar Association opposes the move, arguing that the AMC Multicomplex lacks adequate space and could cause financial losses. Its president, HL Chhingpuia, urged authorities to allow vendors to continue their business at the current site, warning that traders might set up temporary stalls if no alternative is provided.
Association Secretary C. Lalrinawma criticized the AMC for not consulting the Venghlui Local Council, adding that while licensed vendors are being displaced, unauthorized roadside vendors continue operating unchecked.
