AGMC to launch Tripura’s first liver transplant centre

The Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) is set to launch Tripura’s first liver transplant centre, marking a major milestone in the state’s healthcare sector. The initiative will be spearheaded by the Mohan Foundation, a Chennai-based organisation specializing in organ donation and transplantation. The upcoming unit builds on AGMC’s success in kidney transplants, with two procedures performed in 2024. A specialized team from Mohan Foundation has arrived to train medical professionals and educate the public about organ donation procedures.

Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, Medical Superintendent of AGMC and GB Pant Hospital, emphasized that the partnership with Mohan Foundation would streamline the organ donation process across Tripura. Hospital data shows 98 deaths in 2023 and 111 in 2024, many of which involved potential organ donors. The initiative gained momentum following a workshop attended by Chief Minister Manik Saha, who stressed the need for public participation. AIIMS New Delhi professor Dr. Deepak Gupta underscored the importance of forming a brain death certification committee to facilitate transplants.

Mohan Foundation’s Executive Director Pallavi Kumar outlined three key success factors: infrastructure, personnel training, and family counselling. Local organizations like Lions Club and Rotary Club will help raise awareness about organ donation.
