Agartala launches major drainage project to tackle flooding

The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched a large-scale scientific drainage construction project across the city to combat persistent urban flooding, particularly during the monsoon season. The initiative, being implemented under Agartala Smart City Limited, aims to provide a long-term solution to waterlogging issues affecting various parts of the city.

AMC Commissioner Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav stated that the new drainage systems are being built using Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) and are designed to integrate footpaths on top, ensuring both efficient drainage and improved pedestrian infrastructure.

“As part of this initiative, work is currently in progress over a total length of 23 kilometers within Agartala, with special attention to areas that have historically faced severe flooding,” Dr. Yadav said.

On Sunday, officials conducted an inspection of the ongoing construction work along the Lal Bahadur Chowmuhani to Ashram Chowmuhani stretch, one of the worst-affected areas during heavy rains.

“Every year, this region suffers from severe waterlogging due to poor drainage infrastructure. To resolve this, we have developed a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and initiated the construction of a well-planned drainage system to ensure smooth water flow,” Dr. Yadav explained.

The commissioner further mentioned that encroachments along drainage sites had initially posed a challenge, but after discussions, the affected individuals cooperated with the project to facilitate smooth execution.

The drainage system is being constructed on both sides of major roads, and similar projects will be rolled out across the city in a phased manner.
