Resident doctors from Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) staged a protest on Tuesday condemning the rape and murder of a fellow resident doctor at RH Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The demonstration reflects growing anger and demands for justice following the tragic incident. Dr. Himanshu from the psychiatric department outlined the protest’s key demands: immediate punishment for the perpetrator and the establishment of a central act to ensure the safety and protection of resident doctors within hospitals. During the protest, all outpatient departments (OPDs) at AGMC were closed, though emergency services remained operational.
Dr. Basav Ghosh, State Secretary of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Tripura, highlighted that the protest is part of a nationwide movement. “The protest is not limited to Tripura; it’s a significant issue across India. We need enhanced security and a safe working environment for doctors. Our members have been advocating for justice since the morning,” Ghosh stated. He also emphasized the necessity for installing CCTV cameras in hospitals to prevent such incidents in the future. “These measures are crucial to ensuring safety and preventing the need for such rallies,” he added.
Shivani Kambuj, a resident doctor at AGMC, expressed deep dismay over the incident, describing it as “shameful.” She noted that the protest aims to seek justice for the victim and ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future. “The events of August 9 were deeply shocking, and we are protesting here to demand justice for our colleague,” Kambuj said.
