Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has reaffirmed his government’s resolve to curb drug smuggling and substance abuse, calling it a top priority for the state. Speaking during a meeting with the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) led by Chairperson Antar Singh Arya, the CM outlined intensified efforts to fight cross-border drug trafficking.
Lalduhoma informed the delegation that a high-level coordination committee is in place to combat trafficking through both international and inter-state routes. “We will continue to take all necessary steps to curb this menace,” he stated.
Mizoram, which shares a long and porous border with Myanmar and Bangladesh, has become a key transit route for drug smuggling. In 2024, authorities seized over ₹211 crore worth of drugs, including 80.8 kg heroin, 627.7 kg methamphetamine, and 35 kg crystal meth. More than 7,300 people were arrested in related offences last year. Tragically, at least 71 drug-related deaths, including 11 women, were recorded during the period. The chief minister also highlighted steps to promote Hindi education in the state and said six working women’s hostels are being built as part of broader social welfare measures.
