The governor of Kashmar, Hazatullah Shariatmadari, reported the number of casualties in the earthquake and told national television that 35 of the injured have been admitted to the hospital.
The governor said that most of the weak buildings in the city were damaged by the earthquake. According to the US Geological Survey, the depth of the earthquake’s source was 10 kilometers below the surface. A 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit Iran’s northwestern mountainous region early last year. Three people were killed. More than 800 people were injured. The area is bordered by Turkey.
