West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, due to heat and humidity at a religious gathering in Panihati in North 24 Parganas district t hree elderly devotees died on Sunday.
She tweeted, “Distressed to know of 3 old devotees’ death due to heat and humidity in Danda Mahotsav at ISKCON temple at Panihati. CP and DM have rushed, all help being provided. My condolences to the bereaved families, solidarity to devotees,,
Barrackpore Commissionerate Joint Commissioner of Police Dhruvajyoti Dey said “three people were rushed to hospital after they fell seriously ill due to the heat in the crowd during the ‘Doi-Chire Mela’ at a temple on the banks of the Hooghly river in Panihati.”
A large police force is currently manning the crowd at the fair.
