The Indian Army, in collaboration with local authorities, safely detonated 27 unexploded mortar bombs from the 1971 war. The controlled explosions were carried out on August 20, 2024, at the 3 CRPF Battalion Firing Range as part of a Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) initiative.
The mortar bombs were discovered on July 18, 2024, while laborers were digging a pond at Dulal Nama’s residence. The initial find included 12 bombs, with an additional 15 uncovered during further excavation. Given the potential risks to nearby residents, local authorities quickly enlisted the assistance of the Indian Army’s Counter IED (CIED) team.
Responding to a requisition from the SP of West Tripura, the military and civil teams worked together to manage the situation. A secure perimeter was established around the site, and the disposal of the bombs was executed with precision and care. The operation concluded without incident, effectively neutralizing the hazards posed by these remnants of conflict.
